Provision of education services is overseen by the Education Department.  Our education services cover nursery, primary, secondary, special education and technical education. Funding for services is mainly by Government, parents and partners.

Since 1996, we provide Universal Primary education services.  With the introduction of Universal Primary Education (UPE), primary school enrolment increased from 1.6 million in the year 2000 to 7 million in 2007. Other tangible results include increased enrolment and girl-child education. We provide basic education to 62,030 pupils in 197 public and 50 private schools, with a teaching staff of 1,971. We provide infrastructure namely, 1,575 classrooms and 591 teachers’ houses in schools.

Our service indicators are: a pupil to latrine ratio of 89:1; pupil to classroom ratio of 148:1; pupil to desk ratio of 4:1; and the pupil to text book ratio of 4:1. The pass rates and performance in national examinations has greatly improved and increased from 3% in 2005 to 18.2% in 2012 while the number of candidates with ungraded marks have reduced from 10.6% to 3.7% during the same period. In 2014 alone, 1,276 pupils and another 3,730 passed in division 1 and 2 respectively.

We have 14 public secondary schools with 9,255 students and 24 privately owned secondary schools. So far, 20 schools (public and private) participate in Universal secondary education (USE). We have 6 government aided tertiary institutions with 1,429 students.
