Water and Sanitation
We provide, operate and maintain safe water supply technologies and sanitation facilities to the rural communities of the district. Our investment in water supply infrastructure include gravity flow schemes (14) with 1,039 public tap stands; protected spring wells (397); Shallow wells (98); deep wells-boreholes (120), rain water harvesting tanks at households (2,311); water for production dams (19); and valley tanks (8).
Access to safe and clean water has increased in Mbarara district with an average increase from 45% in 2000 to about 63% for rural and 65% for the municipality in 2007. The safe water coverage is 65.9% in the rural areas and 95.7 % in the urban, while accessibility to safe water ranges from 29% and 95%. Out of the district population of 445,600 at least 183,292 (excluding municipal residents) have access to safe water.
